FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents and Community Members,
The school’s annual report card offers a comprehensive summary of Haines Elementary for the 201516 school year. Student achievement remains strong thanks to a dedicated staff and community of parents and volunteers that work collectively to provide a safe, nurturing environment where the learning needs of every child is a priority. This year, enrollment has grown by nearly 50 students, making classes equitable throughout the district and allowing the school to have one teacher for every grade for the first time in the school’s history.
Staff will be implementing new math curriculum (Ready Common Core for grades 46 and Bridges for grades K3) in an effort to better align with the Oregon State Standards and meet the rigorous expectations in the Smarter Balanced State Test. In addition, a new diagnostic tool (iReady) will be utilized to help identify the needs and/or strengths of students in mathematics. A dedicated PTO brings many opportunities for parents to be involved in the school, both through fundraisers as well as community building events. Parents are encouraged to come into the school setting with events like Families of the Month, the Hawk Store, Christmas Around the World, Fall Festival, and much more.
Achievement data: The new Smarter Balanced Assessments show Haines students achieving well above the state average in all academic areas. 70% of students in grades 36 met the benchmark in Language Arts compared to 53% at the state; 60% of students met the benchmark in Math compared to 43%; and 93% met in Science compared to 66% in the state.
